Creating a climate action plan and visual identity for the Newcastle University sustainability team.

Net Zero by 2030. That’s the urgent challenge taken on by Newcastle University. We were appointed to work with the university sustainability team to create a visual identity for their communications centred around this powerful statement of intent. Starting with their timely Climate Action Plan.

The sustainability team at Newcastle University are responsible for environmental sustainability issues across the campus. Ranked 12th out of 154 universities according to ethical and environmental performance with an ambition and duty to continuously improve. Their Climate Action Plan outlines the actions to be taken by the university and summarises the work carried out to date in reducing carbon emissions, the actions required to meet net zero carbon by 2030 and the part to be played by all members of the University community.

Informed at every turn by core research and educational strengths, it aims to influence the way the university community live, work and develop the campus to be shaped by their commitment to environmental sustainability.

We were thrilled to be part of the project and worked closely with the team to create a bold visual identity to translate across all of their activity.

The visual style has a powerful tone with a sense of urgency to the identity. For the action plan title, an exclamation mark integrates into the title to highlight the critical importance of the plan . Colour blocks, iconography and punchy typography combine together to present content with real impact. Infographics of key content and data were uniquely created to visually communicate the bold messages.

The action plan launched Summer 2021 and we look forward to supporting the team with the communications they need to raise awareness of this incredibly important roadmap to change.
