Cromford Mills, set in the heart of the Derwent Valley Mills UNESCO World Heritage Site, is where modern industry began. In 1771, Sir Richard Arkwright built the world’s first successful water-powered spinning mill here, pioneering the factory system that launched the industrial revolution.

Today, the site is cared for by The Arkwright Society, an educational charity and building preservation trust with a bold vision to protect, celebrate, and share this globally significant heritage.

Following a credentials tender, we were appointed to reposition Cromford Mills as a compelling visitor destination. Through immersive visits and discovery sessions with staff and stakeholders from across Derbyshire, we unearthed powerful stories – of innovation that shaped the world, of generations and communities connected to the Mills, and of the site’s continued relevance for todays audiences.

Visitor destination branding

Our approach focused on broadening appeal: reaching curious historians, casual day-trippers and community-minded visitors as well as reinforcing the artisan businesses and workshops.

The new identity reflects Cromford Mills’ multi-faceted nature, celebrating its past while embracing its future. The circular mark is inspired by the water wheel, echoing the continuous cycle of ideas, energy, and progress sparked by Arkwright’s ingenuity.

It symbolises the flow of ideas that began here and transformed the modern world. Including the founding date in the logo anchors the site’s identity in its pivotal heritage and reinforces the Mills’ role as a trailblazer in the industrial revolution, emphasising its authenticity and legacy.

To highlight the many aspects of the destination, we created a set of bespoke illustrative icons, allowing the brand to evolve in a timeless way, just like Cromford Mills itself.
